Karen Roller
PhD
Karen/Karina Roller, PhD, MFT, is an Associate Professor of Counseling at Palo Alto University and Clinical Trainer of Family Connections, a parent-involvement preschool system serving predominantly Spanish-speaking migrant families in the San Francisco Bay Area. Karen/Karina led and trained for psychiatric emergency evaluations across 2 ERs for 11 years. Karina's research program is dedicated to trauma-informed care for the underserved, with publications and presentations focused on education, supervision, and training needs related to crisis and trauma, anti-oppression, and language access. Her supervision has focused on Compassion Satisfaction, ensuring clients receive quality care while preserving practitioners' quality of life. She has experienced many times how clients' well-being deepens when their pain is taken seriously, and how engaging directly with their psychache helps ameliorate their loneliness and hopeless absorption in the suicide trance.
