Kirk James
Resident in Counseling
Kirk James is a native from Mount Vernon, NY. He earned his bachelor's degree in Family Consumer & Early Literacy from Grambling State University and went on to obtain a master's degree in School and Mental Health Counseling from Mercy University. Currently, Kirk is a dedicated Clinical Mental Health Counselor, where he is completing his clinical residency at the student counseling center at Hampton University and the LGBT Life Center. Kirk has successfully passed the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE).
Kirk is deeply committed to social justice and passionately advocates for the mental health and well-being of marginalized groups, including Black and Brown clients and the LGBTQ+ community. He focuses particularly on the distinctive challenges faced by Black men, driven by a profound awareness of the systemic obstacles these communities encounter. His goal is to foster an inclusive, equitable, and affirming environment that promote healing and growth.
Kirk therapeutic framework is centered around an Adlerian therapy approach, which emphasizes the importance of social interest, community, and the inherent drive for individuals to find purpose and belonging. This modality allows him to help clients explore their unique life experiences, understanding how early influences shape their current behaviors and beliefs. By fostering a sense of connection and encouraging personal responsibility, Kirk empowers his clients to create positive changes in their lives.
Beyond his clinical areas of focus, Kirk serves as a mental health speaker, content creator and advocate, leading training sessions on a variety of mental health and wellness subjects. He is dedicated to increasing awareness and providing educational resources that empower individuals and communities to prioritize their mental health. Through his efforts, Kirk aims to make a meaningful impact on those he serves.
